How I Reset My Nervous System (and How You Can Too)
I didn’t realize how much I had disconnected from my body until I finally found my way back.
As a kid I went through a lot. Gymnastics and running weren’t just hobbies for me, they were lifelines. They gave me a place to feel free and happy when much of life didn’t. Looking back, I see why: movement wasn’t only exercise; it was how my nervous system released what my body was holding onto. Gymnastics helped me engage muscles, connect my mind and body, and channel energy into creativity. Running matched my fight/flight wiring, giving me a sense of freedom when I needed it most. In many ways, movement freed me from trauma.
Losing the Outlet
But after college, I stopped moving. Work took over and the outlets I had always relied on disappeared. Since I hadn’t fully healed the trauma underneath, all of it was still there, just waiting. Without the release, stress and disconnection grew. I didn’t notice how far away from myself I had drifted until burnout hit.
Re-Discovering Safety in My Body
It was in the middle of burnout that yoga found me. At first it felt foreign; slow, gentle, quiet. I didn’t like it much. But it gave me a safe space to reconnect, to notice my body again. Over time, yoga helped me start rebuilding trust with myself. Later, I discovered Pilates, and that became the icing on the cake: strength, alignment, and a deeper mind-body connection that felt not only grounding but empowering.
These practices weren’t just “healthy habits.” They were nervous system resets. Each time I moved, stretched, or breathed with intention, I was teaching my body: you’re safe now.
The Lesson: Safety Isn’t Optional
We often treat nervous system safety like it’s optional, something we’ll get to after the to-do list is done. But it isn’t optional. Safety is the foundation for healing, clarity, and growth. When your nervous system feels safe, you can think clearly, act with confidence, and live with more energy and peace.
